In Memoriam: Bonnie Mathies, 1942-2019

Bonnie Mathies, former dean of Wright State University’s Lake Campus in Celina, Ohio, passed away on August 7, 2019. She was 77 years old.

Dr. Mathies began her career in education as a teacher in Oberlin and Toledo, Ohio, where she taught English, history, and biology in public schools. In 1974, she transitioned to higher education and joined the instructional technology faculty in the College of Education and Human Services at Wright State University in Dayton. She would go on to become an assistant professor, an associate professor, a full professor, a department chair, and an associate dean.

In 2007, Dr. Mathies retired, but quickly returned to the university to become associate dean of the Lake Campus. She was named dean of the campus in 2010. During her tenure there, the Lake Campus increased its enrollments, nearly doubled its bachelor degree program offerings, constructed its first residence halls, and purchased nearly 40 acres for expansion. Dr. Mathies retired from her position in 2015.

Dr. Mathies held a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in instructional technology both from the University of Toledo.
