Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, president of Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina, has named Dorothy Browne as the new provost and vice president for academic affairs and student affairs. The small liberal arts college for women was placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and School in December 2016.
In accepting her new post, Dr. Browne said “I am humbled and honored to return to Bennett, after years of having an array of educational experiences and opportunities. It is this diversity of experiences which allows me to treasure and appreciate Bennett’s legacy and traditions while also working with President Dawkins, the faculty, staff and students to ensure Bennett continues to have relevance in the ever-changing world of higher education.”
In 2015, Dr. Browne was named the inaugural dean of the School of Public Health at Jackson State University in Mississippi. Earlier in her career, she was a professor of public health and senior scientist at the Prevention Research Center at Morgan State University in Baltimore. In 2009, Dr. Browne was named director of the Public Health Institute at North Carolina A&T State University.
Dr. Browne is a graduate of Bennett College, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master of social work degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master of public health degree and a doctorate of public health from Harvard University.
