A Trio of New Women Deans at Flagship State Universities

Laura M. Haas was appointed dean of the College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She will become dean on August 1.

Dr. Haas is an IBM Fellow at IBM Research. She has been an employee of IBM since 1981. She holds a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and computer science from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin.

Lynda Welage was named dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota, effective July 31. Since 2011, she has been the dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of New Mexico. Earlier, she taught at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Welage is a graduate of the University of Michigan and earned a pharmacy doctorate at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System.

Elizabeth Moje will be the next dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan. She has been serving as associate dean for research and community education at the university and as interim dean since July 2016. She also is the Arthur R. Thurnau Professor and the George Herbert Mead Collegiate Professor of Education. She joined the faculty at the university in 1997.

Professor Moje is a graduate of Concordia College. She holds a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University and a doctorate from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
