Barbara Z. Borowiecki, professor emerita of geography at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, died recently at a health care facility in Springfield, Illinois. She was 91 years old.
A native of Warsaw, Poland, she lived through the Nazi occupation and came to the United States in 1947 at the age of 23. She enrolled at George Washington University but completed her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree at Indiana University. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Borowiecki joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1960. She was named chair of the geography department in 1971. Professor Borowiecki retired from teaching in 1992 after serving on the university’s faculty for 32 years.
