More than 1,000 Students Apply to Sweet Briar College

Sweet Briar College, the liberal arts educationalSweet Briar College institution for women in Virginia, announced in March 2015 that is was closing its doors. Alumnae of the institution had other ideas and raised enough money to keep the college open this year.

The successful effort to keep the college open was not announced until late June. By this time most first-year students had applied and been accepted elsewhere and many of the students who had been enrolled at Sweet Briar College had made plans to attend other colleges. As a result, there are only about 250 students on campus this semester, down from 700 during the 2014-15 academic year.

But the good news is that the college has received more than 1,000 applications for places in the class of 2020. This is the most applicants to the college in 50 years. The college hopes to enroll 200 first-year students this fall.
