Three Women Scholars Awarded Prestigious Honors

LawrenceLaurie Lawrence, a professor of food and animal science at the University of Kentucky, received the Equine Nutrition Research Award from the Equine Science Society. The award is sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association.

Professor Lawrence is a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in animal nutrition at Colorado State University.

stanoThe new athletic center at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio, was named in honor of retiring president Sister Diana Stano. In June 2013, the college’s existing athletic center was destroyed by a tornado. Dr. Stano served as president of the Catholic women’s college, located just east of Cleveland, for 18 years before her retirement on June 30.

Dr. Stano is a graduate of Ursuline College and holds a doctoral degree in science education from Ohio State University.

Susan Butts, senior collections manager for invertebrate paleontology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University, received the Presidents Award from the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections.

Dr. Butts is a graduate of Hobart and Williams Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Idaho.

On July 15, she is slated to become the first woman president of Schenectady County Community College within the State University of New York System.
