Stanford University Promotes Four Women Faculty Members

Liisa Malkki was named professor of anthropology at Stanford University in California. She is the co-author of Improvising Theory: Process and Temporality in Ethnographic Fieldwork (University of Chicago Press, 2007) and the author of Purity and Exile: Violence, Memory and National Cosmology Among Hutu Refugees in Tanzania (University of Chicago Press, 1995). Professor Malkki holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Karen Casciotti was promoted to associate professor of earth system science. She has been on the Stanford faculty since 2011. Previously, she was conducting research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. Dr. Casciotti is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, where she majored in environmental engineering. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in geosciences from Princeton University.

Michelle Karnes was appointed associate professor of English, effective July 1. She has been a member of the Stanford faculty since 2008. Dr. Karnes is the author of Imagination, Meditation, and Cognition in the Middle Ages (University of Chicago Press, 2011). She is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Karen Parker was promoted to associate research professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. Dr. Parker holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in biological psychology from the University of Michigan. She conducted postdoctoral research in psychiatry and neuroscience at Stanford. She joined the Stanford University faculty in 2006.
