Barbara A. Schaal, the Marry-Dell Chilton Distinguished Professor of Biology and dean of the faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named president-elect of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The organization, founded in 1848, represents 250 affiliate organizations and chapters serving more than 10 million members. It publishes the journal Science.
Professor Schaal will serve for a year as president-elect and then become president of the organization for one year beginning next February. After completing her one-year term as president, she will serve one year as chair of the AAAS board of directors.
Dr. Schaal joined the faculty at Washington University in 1980. Earlier in her career, she taught at the University of Houston and Ohio State University.
A native of Germany, Dr. Schaal is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in biology from Yale University.
