Patricia Smith, an associate professor of English at the College of Staten Island of the City University of New York System, has been selected to receive the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize from the Library of Congress.
The award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, is given out every two years and recognizes the most distinguished book of poetry written by an American and published during the preceding two years. The prize is donated by the family of the late Mrs. Bobbitt of Austin, Texas, in her memory, and established at the Library of Congress. Bobbitt was the late President Lyndon B. Johnson’s sister.
Professor Smith is being honored for her book Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah (Coffee House Press, 2012). The collection, which was also a finalist for the National Book Award, examines the Great Migration of African Americans from the South to northern cities.
Jennifer Gaither, a lawyer by training, has been a Sullivan University faculty member for the past 25 years. She most recently served as the university's associate provost.
Dr. Crowley has served as provost at Ohio Wesleyan University since 2020. She is slated to become the nineteenth president of Kalamazoo College on July 1.
The three women named to provost positions are Nancy Marchand-Martella at the University of Northern Colorado, Lise Youngblade at Colorado State University, and Randi Storch at Western Oregon University.
Although it was initially founded as school for women, the University of Montevallo has never had a woman president. Now the university has reached a historic milestone and selected selected Michelle R. Johnston to serve as its next president.
The selected candidate should have expertise and experience in theoretical models in labor and public economics as well as in microeconometrics and programming.
