Merryl Alber is the new director of the University of Georgia Marine Institute at Sapelo Island. The marine laboratory research field station conducts research and educational programs in coastal ecosystems. As director of the Marine Institute, Dr. Alber will spend one week each month at Sapelo Island and the remainder of her time at the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens, where she is a professor of marine sciences.
Professor Alber has been a member of the University of Georgia faculty since 1994. She is a graduate of Duke University, where she majored in biology. Dr. Alber earned a Ph.D. at Boston University. She is the author of the children’s book And the Tide Comes In: Exploring a Georgia Salt Marsh (Taylor Trade Publishing, 2012).
