A Dozen Women in New Administrative Posts in Higher Education

Meena Singhal is the new associate vice president for the Pacific Coast Campus of Long Beach City College. She previously served as dean of academic services and as interim dean of language arts at the college. Dr. Singhal began her career at the college in 2000 as a faculty member in the department of English as a second language.
Dr. Singhal is a graduate of the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. She earned a master’s degree in teaching English as a second language from McGill University in Montreal and a doctorate in second language acquisition and teaching from the University of Arizona.
Sheila T. Champlin is the new assistant vice chancellor for communications and marketing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis. Since 2006, she was director of the department.
Champlin is a summa cum laude graduate of St. Louis University and holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
Anne P. Massey was named associate vice president for university academic planning and policy at Indiana University in Bloomington. She recently completed service as associate vice provost for faculty and academic affairs and is the Dean’s Research Professor of information systems at the university’s Kelley School of Business. She will begin her new duties on September 1.
Professor Massey has been on the faculty at Indiana University since 1996. She previously taught at North Carolina State University and Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. She holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, all from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Charlene Alexander is the new associate provost for diversity at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. She is also the director of the Office of Institutional Diversity and a full professor of counseling psychology. She joined the faculty at Ball State in 1997.
A native of Trinidad, Dr. Alexander is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Creighton University and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Nebraska.
Andrea Angel was appointed director of development for the College of Business at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She was the director of development for the university’s athletic department.
Angel is a magna cum laude graduate of the College of Business at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she majored in marketing. She was also captain of the university’s golf team for three years.
Renny Christopher was named vice chancellor for academic affairs at the Vancouver campus of Washington State University. She has been serving as associate provost and professor of English at California State University, Channel Islands in Camarillo. Dr. Christopher is the author of The Viet Nam War/The American War: Images and Representations in Euro-American and Vietnamese Exile Narratives (University of Massachusetts Press, 1996).
Dr. Christopher is a graduate of Mills College in Oakland, California. She earned a master’s degree in linguistics from San Jose State University and a Ph.D. in American literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Lisa Nickel is the new associate dean of research and public services at the Swem Library at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was an associate professor and director of the library’s access services at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Nickel is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Robin Miskimins was appointed associate dean for research at the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Dr. Miskimins, a professor of basic biomedical sciences, has been on the faculty at the university since 1991.
Dr. Miskimins is a graduate of the University of Colorado, where she majored in molecular and cellular developmental biology. She holds a master’s degree in genetics and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Arizona.
Lisa Starkey-Wood was named director of admissions at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Since 2009, she has been assistant director of admissions at Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York. She will begin her new duties on August 5.
Starkey holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and public relations and a master’s degree in advertising from Syracuse University.
Brandy A. Randall was appointed associate dean of student professional and program development in the College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies at North Dakota State University. She has served on the faculty at the university since 2002.
Dr. Randall is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Nebraska.
Janet Becker was named the interim associate dean for the Lancaster campus of Ohio University. She is an associate professor of accounting and has taught at the university of 15 years. She will serve for one year while a search for a permanent associate dean is conducted.
Becker is a certified public accountant. She holds an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
Jessie Harper is the new assistant dean for faculty affairs and diversity in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She has been on the staff at the university since 2004.
Dr. Harper holds two master’s degree and an educational doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.
