A Dozen Women Taking on New Administrative Roles in Higher Education

GLORIA WATERSGloria S. Waters was appointed vice president and associate provost for research at Boston University. She has been serving as dean of the university’s Sargent College and is a professor of speech, language, and hearing sciences.

Dr. Waters is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in psychology from Concordia University in Montreal.

cardenasSonia Cardenas, who was recently promoted to full professor of political science at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, was named associate academic dean at the college.

Dr. Cardenas joined the Trinity College faculty in 2001. She is the author of Conflict and Compliance: State Responses to International Human Rights Pressure (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2007) and Human Rights in Latin America: A Politics of Terror and Hope (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009).

Dr. Cardenas is a graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

jjimenezJennifer Jimenez Marana was appointed director of diversity and multicultural affairs at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland. She was an associate dean at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. Previously, she served as dean of students and director of multicultural affairs at Bard College in Annandale-0n-Hudson, New York.

Marana is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. She holds a master’s degree in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland.

heystek-geralyn300Geralyn Heystek was named director of career services at the Haworth College of Business of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. She began her career at the university as an instructor and then joined the staff as full-time academic adviser in 1998.

Heystek holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Western Michigan University.

cami_inlineCamisha Duffy was appointed executive director of the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access at Murray State University in Kentucky. For the past two years, she has served as the interim director of the Office of Equal Opportunity.

Duffy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Murray State University.

lskinnerLee J. Skinner, an associate professor of Spanish at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California, was named associate dean of the faculty at the liberal arts institution. She joined the faculty in 2008 after teaching at the University of Kansas.

Dr. Skinner is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and holds a Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta. She is the author of History Lessons: Reconfiguring the Nineteenth-Century Historical Novel in Spanish America (Juan de la Cuesta, 2006).

hogan-wesleyWesley C. Hogan was named director of the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She has served for the past decade as a professor of history at Virgina State University.

Dr. Hogan is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from Duke University. She is the author of Many Minds, One Heart: SNCC’s Dream for a New America (University of North Carolina Press, 2007).

Annie_KerrickAnnie N. Kerrick was appointed Title IX coordinator at Boise State University in Idaho. She has been serving as an attorney for the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence.

Kerrick is a graduate of Boise State University and the Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Washington.

ruschKelly A. Rusch was named vice president for research and creative activities at North Dakota State University. Since 1993, Dr. Rusch has served on the faculty in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Rusch is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Louisiana State University. She is a past president of the Aquaculture Engineering Society.

Elliott-JenJennifer Elliott is the new associate vice president for health affairs and strategic initiatives at the University of Louisville. She will also serve as special adviser to the executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Louisville’s Health Science Center. She was chair of the health care service group of the law firm Stites & Harbison.

Elliott is a graduate of Centre College in Daville, Kentucky. She is a magna cum laude graduate of the St. Louis University School of Law.

harris-haywood-sonjaSonja Harris-Haywood was named director of the Partnership for Urban Health, a joint effort of the Northeast Ohio Medical University and Cleveland State University. She has been serving as an assistant professor of family medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She previously taught at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Dr. Harris-Haywood is a graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. She received her medical degree at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and also holds a master’s degree in clinical investigation from Case Western Reserve University.

popmaJoellen Popma was appointed director of the University Counseling Center at the University of Rochester in New York. For the past seven years, she was the associate director of the Counseling Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Popma holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky.
