Jody Lewen Honored for Lifetime Achievement in Higher Education
Dr. Lewen has received the 2024 Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education. She is the founder and president of Mount Tamalpais College, a higher education institution which offer courses at San Quentin State Prison in California.
In Memoriam: Shani Mott, 1976-2024
Dr. Mott was a lecturer in the department of history and Center for Africana Studies at Johns Hopkins University where she worked for the past 16 years. Her academic studies focused on racial language in American popular culture.

J. Kēhaulani Kauanui, a professor of American studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, was recognized with the American Indian History Lifetime Achievement Award, given by the Western History Association. The award honors one scholar each year who has served in the trenches on all fronts to advance Indigenous history.
Beverly Daniel Tatum Selected to Lead Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts
Dr. Tatum served as president of Spelman College in Atlanta from 2002 to 2015. Previously she was a professor of psychology and dean of the college at Mount Holyoke College. Earlier in her career, she taught at Westfield State College in Massachusetts and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
President of Hobart and William Smith College Wins Award From the American Economic Association
Joyce Jacobsen was named the winner of the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award, which has been given annually since 1998 to an individual who has furthered the status of women in the economics profession through example, achievements, increasing our understanding of how women can advance in the economics profession or mentoring others.
In Memoriam: Sheila Tobias, 1935-2021
In 1967, Tobias she appointed assistant to the vice president for academic affairs at Cornell University. In 1970 she was named associate provost at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, where she led efforts to transition the once all-male school into a coeducational institution. Tobias’ writings and research focused on women’s anxiety toward pursuing math and science fields.
