Christine Poggi to Head the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University
Currently, Dr. Poggi is a professor of art history at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She holds a secondary appointment in Italian studies. She has also served as director of the Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Lisa Vollendorf Appointed Provost at Sonoma State University in California
Since 2012, Dr. Vollendorf has been serving as dean of the College of Humanities and Arts at San Jose State University in California. Earlier, Dr. Vollendorf was a professor of Spanish at California State University, Los Angeles and taught at Wayne State University in Detroit and Miami University in Ohio.
A Major Vote of Confidence for the President of Lafayette College
In 2013, Alison Byerly was named the first woman president of Lafayette College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Easton, Pennsylvania. The board of trustees of Lafayette College has now extended Dr. Byerly’s contract for an additional five years.

Churchill Scholars will study for master’s degrees in STEM fields at the University of Cambridge in England. Of the 15 Churchill Scholarships awarded this year, four went to women. A year ago, nine of the 15 winners of Churchill Scholarships were women.

Adele Howe was a professor of computer science at Colorado State University. She joined the faculty in 1992 and in 2010 was named Professor Laureate in the university’s College of Natural Sciences.

Yale University Art Historian Wins Book Award
Kishwar Rizvi, associate professor in the history of art at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, received the Charles Rufus Morey Book Award from the College Art Association. Dr. Rizvi joined the faculty at Yale in 2006 and was promoted to associate professor and granted tenure in 2012.

Amy Gutmann, president of the University of Pennsylvania, had her contract extended through June 30, 2022. She will be the longest-serving president in the university’s history. Carol Jean Vale, president of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelaphia, was appointed to a sixth five-year term.

Martha E. Pollack to Be the 14th President of Cornell University
Dr. Pollack will also hold a tenured faculty position in the departments of computer science and information science at Cornell. She has served as provost at the University of Michigan since 2013. Professor Pollack has been on the faculty at the University of Michigan since 2000.

Erica Armstrong Dunbar, the Blue and Gold Professor of Black American Studies and History at the University of Delaware, is the winner of the Lorraine A. Williams Leadership Award from the Association of Black Women Historians.
Marilyn Nelson Wins the $25,000 Neustadt Prize for Children’s Literature
Marilyn Nelson is a professor emerita at the University of Connecticut. Professor Nelson is a winner of the Pushcart Prize and has been a finalist for the National Book Award three times. From 2001 to 2006, Dr. Nelson was the poet laureate of the state of Connecticut.
In Memoriam: Gloria Naylor, 1950-2016
Naylor, who taught creative writing at several univeraities, was best known for her her 1982 novel The Women of Brewster Place, for which she won the National Book Award for the best first novel.
LaVerne Harmon Named the Next President of Wilmington University in Delaware
LaVerne Harmon is currently executive vice president at Wilmington University. When she takes office on July 1, she will become the first African American woman to serve as president of a university in the state of Delaware.
