Barbara Elias of Bowdoin College Wins Book Award From the American Political Science Association
Barbara Elias, who was promoted on July 1 to associate professor of government and granted tenure at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, has received the American Political Science Association’s 2020 award for “Best International Security Book by a Non-tenured Faculty Member.”

Dr. Somerville has held leadership positions at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Lorain County Community College, Iowa State University, Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, and most recently Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, where she was executive vice president.
Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota Selects Alison Byerly as Its Next President
In 2013, Dr. Byerly became the first woman president of Lafayette College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Easton, Pennsylvania. Earlier, she was was provost and executive vice president at Middlebury College in Vermont. Dr. Byerly will begin her new job on August 1.

Michigan State’s Alison Bernstein Honored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Dr. Bernstein, an assistant professor of translational neuroscience in the College of Human Medicine, was honored for her research into the interaction of genetics and environmental exposure, such as how some pesticides alter neurons in the brain that may lead to Parkinson’s disease.

Eleni Katifori, associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania, has been awarded the 2021 American Physical Society Early Career Award for Soft Matter Research. Dr. Katifori was honored for “the seminal use of physical principles in understanding living transport networks.”

Theresa Keeley, an assistant professor of history at the University of Louisville, was honored for her book on the role of the faith community, in particular the Maryknoll order, on U.S. policy in Central America in the 1980s.
Elena Past of Wayne State University Wins Book Award From the Modern Language Association
Elena Past, professor of Italian at Wayne State University in Detroit, was selected to receive the Howard R. Marraro Prize from the Modern Language Association. The award honors an outstanding book in the field of Italian literature or comparative literature involving Italian.

Jianghong Liu has been named the Marjorie O. Rendell Endowed Professor in Healthy Transitions at the University of Pennsylvania. Syd Carpenter was appointed to the Peggy Chan Professorship in Black Studies at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and Gannit Ankori was named the Henry and Lois Foster Director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
In Memoriam: Leslie Altman Recoria, 1945-2020
Dr. Rescoria taught at the University of Pennsylvania and later was hired in 1985 as an assistant professor and advanced to an endowed full professorship at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. At Bryn Mawr, she served as chair of the psychology department.

Sister Hoben joined the faculty at Immaculata in 1960. She later chaired the English department. In 1982, she assumed the presidency of Immaculata University, serving two, five-year terms.
Viviana Chiu Sik Wu Honored as an Emerging Scholar in the Field of Nonprofit Management
Dr. Wu joined the School of Public Policy at the Univerity of Massachusetts Amherst this fall. Her research interests include philanthropy and nonprofit management, inequality and place-based disadvantage, engagement, and advocacy on social media, computational methods, and text as data.
