Laurie Stenberg Nichols to Lead Black Hills State University in South Dakota
Dr. Nichols has served as the first woman president of the University of Wyoming for the past three years. From 2009 to 2016 she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at South Dakota State University. She is expected to serve as interim president of Black Hills State University for the next year.
Seven Universities Announce the Appointment of Women Scholars to Dean Positions
The women appointed to dean posts are Susan Parish at Virginia Commonwealth University, Claire Stewart at the University of Nebraska, Laris Genin at Wichita State, Gretchen Ritter at Ohio State, Rachel Nardo at Utah State, Barbara Rasco at the University of Wyoming, and Tamar Szabó Gendler at Yale University.
Report Finds Only a Small Fraction of Academic Research is Authored by Women
For this report, the researchers scanned 14.6 million studies published between 2006 and 2017 by scientists at 963 institutions across the world, determining gender of authors from their first names. In the United States, women were authors on 31.8 percent of all academic research. Lower female representation existed in the U.K. and Germany.

Dr. Williams currently serves as a professor and head of the department of kinesiology at Pennsylvania State University. She first joined the Penn State faculty as an assistant professor in 1997. She was promoted to associate professor in 2003, full professor in 2009, and department head in 2012.
New Study Examines the Huge Gender Income Gap in the Nation’s Wealthiest Households
The researchers found that women’s income alone is sufficient to place a family within the top one percent of all families in only 5 percent of all elite households. Moreover, women’s income is necessary in pushing a household into the one percent threshold in only an additional 15 percent of all wealthy households.
Coppin State University President Maria Thompson to Step Down at the End of the Academic Year
Maria Thompson,the first woman president of Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, has announced she will retire at the end of the academic year after overcoming recent health challenges. She became president of Coppin State University in 2015.
Joan Neff Is the New Leader of the West Virginia Institute of Technology
Dr. Neff was appointed provost at the university campus this past spring and she will continue to serve in that role. Before coming to the West Virginia University Institute of Technology, Dr. Neff had been serving as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

In Memoriam: Olivia Juliette Hooker, 1915-2018
During World War II, Dr. Hooker became the first Black woman to serve on active duty with the United States Coast Guard. She used her G.I. benefits to fund her graduate education at Columbia University and the University of Rochester. Professor Hooker served on the faculty at Fordham University in New York from 1963 to 1985.
Ohio State University Study Finds Differences in Brains of Girls Who Engage in Self-Harm
Using magnetic resonance imaging the research team, led by a professor of psychology at Ohio State University, found clear decreases in volume in parts of the brain called the insular cortex and inferior frontal gyrus in girls who engaged in self-harm. These areas of the brain regulate human emotions.

Lisa C. Freeman has been appointed as the thirteenth and first woman president of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She had been serving as acting president since July 2017. Before coming to Northern Illinois University in 2010, she served on the staff at Kansas State University for 16 years.

Study Finds Link Between Number of Women Students and Doctoral Completion Rates
A new study from Ohio State University has found that the fewer women who enter a doctoral program at the same time, the less likely any one of them will earn their doctorate within six years. When there is only one woman in a new doctoral class, she is 12 percentage points less likely to complete her degree within six years than her male classmates.
Educated Women Are More Likely to Get Married and Stay Married Than Women With Less Education
Dr. Yue Qian of the University of British Columbia found that the proportion of marriages in which the husband had a higher level of education than his spouse dropped from 24 percent to 15 percent and marriages in which the wife had more education rose from 22 percent to 29 percent between 1980 and 2012. Women with a higher level of education were more likely to get, and stay, married.

In a new study, researchers from Ohio State University have found that loneliness was much less prevalent for young girls who had strong relationships with their fathers. The study also found that parent-child closeness did not have an effect on young boys’ level of loneliness

Duke Kunshan University was founded six years ago. After only holding graduate classes for four years, the university enrolled its first cohort of undergraduate students in August. Feng Youmei, who has been a visiting scholar at Ohio State University in the past, is the first woman to lead Duke Kushan University.

Dr. Rush, a professor of internal equine medicine and specializes in equine respiratory disease, is serving as interim dean. She joined the faculty at the veterinary school in 1993 and served as head of the clinical sciences department from 2006 to 2017.
In Memoriam: Susan Klem Jackson
Dr. Susan Jackson began teaching at Boston University in 1982 as a lecturer in French. At the time of her death, she was an associate professor of French and assistant provost for general education at the university.
