In Memoriam: Fiona Cowie, 1963-2018
Dr. Cowie began her career at CalTech in 1992 as an instructor in philosophy and was promoted to full professor in 2010. Her research focused on the evolution of the human mind and philosophical questions about language.
A Half Dozen Women Among the 2018 Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering
Each of the 18 new Packard Fellows will receive $875,000 over five years for them to use to pursue their research interests in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, or engineering. The Royal Society of Chemistry Honors CalTech’s Jaqueline Barton
Jaqueline Barton, a professor of chemistry at CalTech, is one of three winners and the only woman to win a 2018 Centenary Prize from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom. From 2015 to 2018, only 8 percent of all scholars who were nominated for this award have been women.
Doris Tsao Selected as Winner of the 2018 Perl-UNC Neuroscience Prize
The award is given out by the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine for a seminal discovery in neuroscience. CalTech Professor Doris Tsao is being honored for “major contributions to our understanding of how the brain recognizes human faces.”
Six Women Appointed to Named Professorships at the California Institute of Technology
The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena has announced that 25 faculty members have been appointed to named professorships. Six of these appointments went to women: Azita Emani, Linda Hsieh-Wilson, Beverly McKeon, Dianne Newman, Maria Spiropulu, and Cindy Weinstein.
In Memoriam: Shirley Ann Mount Hufstedler, 1925-2016
Shirley Hufstedler was the nation’s first secretary of the Department of Education. She also served on the board of trustees of the California Institute of Technology for 39 years.

In Memoriam: Claudia Alexander, 1959-2015
Dr. Alexander joined the staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1986. She was the project manager for the Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Cassini mission to Saturn, and the lead U.S. scientist on the European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission to rendezvous with a comet.
University of Maryland’s Ellen Williams Confirmed as Head of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy
Ellen Williams has been on leave as a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park. She has been serving at Chief Scientist for BP. She holds a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.
