University of Cincinnati Researchers Develop Oral Vaccine for Breast Cancer Survivors

uc_logoResearchers at the University of Cincinnati and the National Institutes of Health have produced a new oral vaccine that may be used to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer. The new vaccine was reported in an article published in Molecular Therapy, the journal of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. The article’s lead author is Jason Steele, a research assistant professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

The adeno-associated virus (AAV) can be delivered orally because the vaccine is not broken down by stomach acids. In test trials on animals, 100 percent of the subjects had no tumors after one year.
