Two Women Named to Endowed Chairs at Vanderbilt University

Lorrie_Moore_verticalLorrie Moore has been named the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. She will begin teaching this fall. Moore is the author of the short story collections, Birds of America and Like Life and the novels A Gate at the Stairs, Anagrams, and Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? She currently serves as the Delmore Schwartz Professor in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Moore is a summa cum laude graduate of St. Lawrence University and holds a master’s degree from Cornell University.

ApplegateCelia S. Applegate was named the William R. Kenan Jr. Chair in History at Vanderbilt University. She specializes in modern European history with an emphasis on Germany. She served on the history department faculty at the University of Rochester from 1988 to 2012. There, she served as the director of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Studies.

Dr. Applegate is a summa cum laude graduate of Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She holds a Ph.D. in history from Stanford University.
