In 1980 women made up only one third of all students enrolled in American law schools. Over the next two decades women nearly closed the gender gap in law school enrollments. In 2001-02 academic year, women made up 49 percent of the total enrollments in U.S. law schools.
But since that time, progress has not only come to a halt, it has reversed. In the 2011-12 academic year there were 68,262 women enrolled in U.S. law schools compared to 78,026 men. Thus, women made up 46.7 percent of the total enrollments.
