New Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Scientists at Georgia State University and Purdue University will share a five-year, $2.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to examine the role of alcohol abuse in intimate partner violence. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 29 percent of women and 10 percent of men are victims of intimate partner violence. It is thought that in many instances alcohol is a contributing factor but there has been no comprehensive academic study on the subject.

Clark University, Assumption College, the College of the Holy Cross, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, all in central Massachusetts, will share a $499,962 grant aimed at reducing the number of sexual assaults occurring on their campuses and on other college campuses in the area. The grant was issued by the Office on Violence Against Women of the U.S Department of Justice. The grant will fund programs on victim services, prevention and education initiatives, and will strengthen security and reporting mechanisms.
