A Quartet of Women Selected for New Dean Positions

Victoria Groves-Scott has been named dean of the School of Education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. For nearly a decade, she has served as dean of the College of Education at the University of Central Arkansas. She previously held several roles with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, including assistant dean for the School of Education, assistant provost, director of university assessment, and department chair.

Dr. Groves-Scott is a graduate of Drury University in Springfield, Missouri, where she majored in elementary education with a minor in special education. She holds a master’s degree in special education and learning disabilities from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a doctorate in special education from the University of Kansas.

Kara Zografos has been promoted from interim dean to permanent dean of the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Fresno. A full professor of public health, she has been a member of the Fresno State faculty for nearly two decades. She has held several roles throughout her long tenure, including director of the master of public health degree program and chair of the department of public health.

Dr. Zografos earned her bachelor’s degree in health science with an emphasis on community health and her master of public health degree from Fresno State. She holds a doctorate in health education with an emphasis in epidemiology from Loma Linda University in California.

Kelly Norris Martin has been promoted from interim dean to permanent dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. Since joining the institute’s faculty in 2011, she has served in several academic positions, including associate dean for faculty and staff affairs, director of the School of Communication, and co-founder of the Expressive Communication Center.

Dr. Martin is a graduate of John Carroll University in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in communication, rhetoric, and digital media at North Carolina State University.

Winifred “Elysse” Newman has been named dean of the College of Arts and Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She comes to her new role from Clemson University in South Carolina, where she serves as the Mickel Professor of Architecture, associate dean for research and faculty affairs, and director of the Institute for Materials, Systems, and Environments in the College of Architecture, Art, and Construction.

Dr. Newman earned bachelor’s degrees in architecture and history from the University of Texas at Austin. She received a master of philosophy degree, a master of architecture degree, and a Ph.D. in architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and urban design from Harvard University.

Caroline Attardo Genco Named the First Woman President of the University at Buffalo

Dr. Geneco comes to her new role from Tufts University in Massachusetts, where she has served as provost for the past four years. She is slated become the University at Buffalo's first woman president on August 10.
