In Memoriam: Martha May Tevis

Martha May Tevis, longtime professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, passed away on September 26.

In 1967, Dr. Tevis joined the faculty at what is now the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as a professor of education. Throughout her five-decades-long tenure at the institution, she held several roles including secondary program coordinator for undergraduate and graduate programs, graduate coordinator, and chair of the department of curriculum and secondary instruction. She participated in several committees on campus and served as a member of the University Press Editorial Advisory Board.

As an academic, Dr. Tevis studied social justice, the history of education, and educational philosophy. She was very involved within the broader field of education, including service as president and secretary of the International Society for Educational Biography, president of the Southwest Society of Philosophy and Education, and editor of Educational Studies and Vitae Scholasticae.

A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Dr. Tevis received her bachelor’s degree in Latin with a minor in English and her master of education degree with a specialization in Latin from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. She earned her Ph.D. in the history and philosophy of education from the University of Texas at Austin.
