Six Women Faculty Members Who Have Been Appointed to New Positions

Shweta Akhouri has been selected to serve as interim assistant dean of clinical education in the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. A faculty member since 2020, she currently serves as an assistant professor of humanities, health, and society in the division of family and community medicine. She previously taught in the family medicine residency program at the University of Louisville.

Dr. Akhouri is a graduate of Florida International University, where she double-majored in psychology and biology. She earned her medical degree from St. Matthews University School of Medicine in the Cayman Islands.

Mollie Metevier has joined the faculty at Simmons University in Boston as an assistant professor of practice and manager of field experience in the School of Library and Information Science. She brings two decades of archival and teaching experience to her new role. Previously, she taught in the master’s degree program in library science at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Professor Metevier received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and her master of library and information science degree from Simmons University.

Jennifer Edwards-Johnson has been named associate dean for community academic programs in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University. She currently serves as an associate professor of family medicine and community assistant dean for the university’s Flint campus. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, she also cares for patients in the Flint community.

Dr. Edwards-Johnson holds a master of public health degree from the University of Michigan and a doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Michigan State University.

Simone White has been named associate faculty director of the Kelly Writers House at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been a member of the university’s department of English faculty since 2018 and currently holds the rank of associate professor. In addition to teaching, she has published several poetry collections, including Of Being Dispersed (Futurepoem Books, 2016).

Dr. White holds a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School, a master of fine arts degree from The New School in New York, and a Ph.D. in English from the City University of New York.

Ashley McMillan has been named associate dean for clinical affairs for the School of Dental Medicine at Lyon College in Little Rock, Arkansas. She has been a faculty member with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for the past decade, most recently serving as an associate professor of dentistry and director of the general practice dental residency.

Dr. McMillan holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Sasha McLarty has been appointed co-director of the Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach at Washington State University. She currently serves as an assistant professor in the university’s department of civil and environmental engineering. She conducts extensive research into groundwater and large-scale hydrologic systems in an effort to better understand how much water people use and how available supplies are changing.

Dr. McLarty received her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in civil engineering with a focus on hydrology and water resources from the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
