The New President of the American College of Sports Medicine

Stella L. Volpe, department head and professor of the department of human nutrition, foods, and exercise in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech, was elected as president of the American College of Sports Medicine. The American College of Sports Medicine has a far-reaching impact, representing 70 distinct sports medicine professions. Its global outreach extends to over 50,000 members and certified professionals hailing from 90 countries.

“While the American College of Sports Medicine has been an international leader in the field of exercise science and sports medicine for almost 70 years,” Dr. Volpe said, “we must continue to reach to attain our goals. Membership is a vital aspect and priority in the coming years. Our members are the lifeblood of the organization, and we must continue to attract and sustain a diverse membership to help us address the issues of an ever-changing world.”

Professor Volpe came to Virginia Tech in 2020 after serving as head of the department of nutrition sciences at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Earlier in her career, she taught at the University of Massachusetts and the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Volpe’s research focuses on obesity and diabetes prevention using nutrition and exercise interventions, mineral supplementation, and by altering the environment to result in greater physical activity and healthy eating. She also conducts research on athletes of all levels, from recreational to professional.

Dr. Volpe is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she majored in exercise science. She holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology/cardiac rehabilitation and a Ph.D. in human nutrition and foods from Virginia Tech.
