Three Women Who Have Been Appointed Provosts

Claudia E. San Miguel was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at Texas A&M International University in Laredo. Earlier, she served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, chair of the department of social sciences, director of the criminal justice program, and director of the Border Studies Institute.

“As provost, my top priority is advancing the success of our students, first through enabling affordable and accessible courses for them to pursue their dreams, and by actively supporting their academic path to timely graduation via effective student support services such as advising, mentoring, and tutoring,” Dr. San Miguel said. “TAMIU is an amazing university, and daily demonstrates an unwavering commitment to its students, staff, and faculty. Together, we will continue to serve as a beacon of higher education for all.”

Dr. San Miguel holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice from Texas A&M International University. She earned a Ph.D. in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.

Shantay R. Grays was named provost and executive vice president at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland. Dr. Grays joins Howard Community College after serving the Houston Community College District since 1998. She held several positions within Houston Community College, including associate vice chancellor of enrollment services and student engagement, chief of staff to the chancellor, executive officer to the chancellor, director of student success & special projects, and manager of student services initiatives.

Dr. Grays’ research interests include issues affecting graduation and persistence rates of African American and Latino males in higher education.

Dr. Grays earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Grambling State University in Louisiana. She holds a master of public administration degree from the Keller Graduate School of Management and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin.

Catherine Swick is the new provost at Trine University in Angola, Indiana. Dr. Swick most recently served Trine University as vice president of academic affairs. Prior to that role, she was dean of Trine’s Rinker-Ross School of Health Sciences. She joined Trine’s faculty in 2010 after serving in a variety of academic roles at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

“I’m honored to serve the university in this role during this time of unprecedented growth and innovation,” Dr. Swick said. “I look forward to working to provide Trine students with an excellent educational environment supported by a vibrant campus community.”

Dr. Swick holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Bowling Green State University.
