In Memoriam: Christine Lillian Krueger, 1957-2023

Christine Krueger, professor emerita of English at Marquette University in Milwaukee, died on July 8. She was 66 years old and had suffered from cancer.

A native of Wausau, Wisconsin, Dr. Krueger was a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. She went on to earn a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Princeton University in New Jersey.

Dr. Krueger joined the English department at Marquette University in 1985. Her research focused on the subtle intersections between Victorian literature and culture generally with a focus on theology and preaching. She was the author of several books including The Reader’s Repentance: Women Preachers, Women Writers and Nineteenth-Century Social Discourse (University of Chicago Press, 1992) and Reading for the Law: Gender Advocacy and British Literary History (University of Virginia Press, 2010).

During her tenure at Marquette University, Profesor Krueger served as director of the University Core of Common Studies and president of the scholarly organization Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies. She retired in 2020.
