Carol Christ, Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, to Retire in 2024

Carol Christ, chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, announced that she will step down from her post at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. Dr. Christ began her term as the 11th chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley on July 1, 2017, after serving as provost.

“My time in office has been meaningful and rewarding beyond compare, and I will sorely miss the challenges, the opportunities, and the daily interactions with the members of Cal’s amazing extended family,” Dr. Christ said.

From 2002 to 2013, Dr. Christ was president of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Before leading Smith College, Dr. Christ served on the Berkeley faculty for 30 years, including six years as executive vice chancellor and provost.

Professor Christ is the author of The Finer Optic: The Aesthetic of Particularity in Victorian Poetry (Yale University Press, 1975) and Victorian and Modern Poetics (University of Chicago Press, 1984).

Dr. Christ is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Yale University.
