A Trio of Women Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Professorships

Christine Alvarado, the associate dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education and a professor in the computer science and engineering department at the University of California, San Diego, will be the inaugural holder of the Paul R. Kube Endowed Chair of Computer Science at the university. Dr. Alvarado joined the University of California, San Diego faculty in 2012. Earlier, she was a tenured associate professor at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont. California.

Professor Alvarado is a summa cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she majored in computer science. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Allison Jaynes was appointed the F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Iowa. Dr. Jaynes’s research focuses on space weather, the inner magnetosphere, and the radiation belts and how those regions of geospace connect to atmospheric and auroral physics. She joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 2017.

Dr. Jaynes earned a Ph.D. at the University of New Hampshire and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Zelda Lockhart was named the Distinguished Endowed Associate Professor of Creative Writing and African American Literature in the department of language and literature at North Carolina Central University. She has written numerous novels, including Fifth Born (Atria, 2002) and Cold Running Creek (Lavenson Press, 2006).

Dr. Lockhart is a graduate of Norfolk State University, where she majored in English language and literature. She holds a master’s degree in literature from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and a doctorate in expressive art therapies from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
