Yale University Announces the Appointment of Three Women Scholars to Endowed Chairs

Lucila Ohno-Machado, who combines a fascination with life science and computer science to study predictive models and data sharing, was recently appointed the Waldemar von Zedtwitz Professor of Medicine and Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale. She joined the faculty at Yale School of Medicine in January as the inaugural chair of the Section of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science and deputy dean for biomedical Informatics. Prior to coming to Yale, Dr. Ohno-Machado was health sciences associate dean for informatics and technology, founding chief of the Division of Biomedical Informatics in the Department of Medicine, and distinguished professor of medicine at the University of California San Diego.

Dr. Ohno-Machado received her medical degree from the University of São Paulo in Brazil. She holds an MBA from the Escola de Administração de São Paulo, Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Brazil and a Ph.D. in medical information sciences and computer science from Stanford University.

Nancy Banasiak, whose research focuses on improving the lives of children with asthma, was recently appointed the Wendy U. and Thomas C. Naratil Professor of Nursing at the Yale School of Nursing. She has been a faculty member at the School of Nursing since 1998. Dr. Banasiak is a member of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, where she is co-chair of the Asthma and Allergy special interest group.

Dr. Banasiak holds a master’s degree in nursing and a doctor of nursing practice degree from the Catholic Univerity of America in Washington, D.C.

Millicent Marcus, a scholar who specializes in Italian culture from the interdisciplinary perspectives of literature, history, and film, was recently appointed the Sarai Ribicoff Professor of Italian Studies. A faculty member at Yale since 2005, Dr. Marcus chaired her department from 2016 to 2020, and currently serves as director of graduate studies. She is the author of several books including Italian Film in the Shadow of Auschwitz (University of Toronto, 2007) and Italian Film in the Present Tense (University of Toronto Press, 2023).

Dr. Marcus is a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and holds a Ph.D. from Yale University.
