Three Women Who Have Been Appointed to Diversity Positions in Higher Education

Krista L. Walker was named assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion for the College of Nursing at Michigan State University. She was an assistant professor of family medicine and director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado Boulder School of Medicine.

Dr. Walker is a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in urban affairs from Queens College of the City University of New York, a master’s degree in teaching urban adolescents with disabilities from Long Island University, and a Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership studies from the University of Iowa.

The Indiana University School of Medicine has named Chemen Neal as its first executive associate dean for diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice and chief diversity officer. Dr. Neal joined the faculty at the medical school in 2011 and currently serves as an associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Neal is a graduate of San Diego State University. She earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Indiana University School of Medicine

Nicole Joseph, associate professor of mathematics education at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development, has been named associate dean for equity, diversity, and inclusion for the college. Her research explores Black women and girls’ experience and identity in mathematics and how their underrepresentation in mathematics is shaped by whiteness and white supremacy. Dr. Joseph joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 2016 after teaching at the University of Denver.

Dr. Joseph is a graduate of Seattle University, where she majored in business administration. She holds a master’s degree in human development from Pacific Oaks College Northwest in Seattle and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Washington.
