Marie Lynn Miranda Will Be the Tenth Chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago

Marie Lynn Miranda has been named the tenth chancellor of the University of Illinois Chicago and a vice president of the University of Illinois System, effective July 5, 2023.

The University of Illinois Chicago enrolls more than 22,000 undergraduate students and nearly 12,000 graduate students, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 53 percent of the undergraduate student body.

“It is an honor to be chosen to lead one of the country’s great urban universities and to serve this global city and its people,” Dr. Miranda said. “I look forward to learning from and working with students, faculty, and staff as we work collaboratively with our community partners to meet the pressing challenges and opportunities before us. Together we can provide life-changing educational programs at scale, while fostering the world-class research and engagement our city, state, country, and world need.”

Dr. Miranda is a professor in the department of applied and computational mathematics and statistics at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. From 2020 to 2021, she was provost at Notre Dame. Earlier, Dr. Miranda was provost at Rice University from 2015 to 2019 and dean of what was then the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan from 2012 to 2015. Professor Miranda spent 21 years as a member of the faculty at Duke University, including nine years as director of undergraduate programs for the Nicholas School of the Environment.

Dr. Miranda is a graduate of Duke University, where she double majored in mathematics and economics. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.
