Three Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to Endowed Positions in Higher Education

Kishwar Rizvi, a leader in the study of art and the built environment in Islamic cultures, has been appointed the Robert Lehman Professor in the History of Art, Islamic Art, and Architecture at Yale University. Professor Rizvi holds appointments in the department of the history of art and the Yale School of Architecture. Professor Rizvi has been a member of the Yale faculty since 2006. She previously held a faculty appointment at Barnard College in New York City. Her latest book is The Transnational Mosque: Architecture and Historical Memory in the Contemporary Middle East (University of North Carolina Press, 2020).

Dr. Rizvi is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She holds a master of architecture degree from the University Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Amber Wiley, an award-winning architectural and urban historian whose teaching and research center on the social aspects of design and how it affects urban communities, will join the University of Pennsylvania Stuart Weitzman School of Design as the inaugural Matt and Erika Nord Director of the Center for the Preservation of Civil Rights Sites, effective in 2023. She will teach principally in the graduate program in historic preservation. Dr. Wiley is currently a member of the art history faculty at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Dr. Wiley holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Yale University. She received a master’s degree in architectural history from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in American studies from George Washington University.

Silvia López was named the Maxine H. and Winston R. Wallin professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Professor López teaches a variety of courses in the Spanish department that explore critical problems in the cultures and literatures of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin America. She also teaches Spanish language classes at all levels. She joined the faculty at the college in 1997.

Dr. López is a graduate of Santa Clara University in California. She earned a master’s degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.
