Sian Leah Beilock Will Be the First Woman to Serve as President of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire

Sian Leah Beilock has been selected as the nineteenth president of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. When she takes office on July 1, 2023, Dr. Beilock will be the first woman to lead the college in its more than 250-year history. Dartmouth College, which did not admit women until 1972, now has an undergraduate student body where women make up 49 percent of the total.

“It is an immense honor to join Dartmouth, one of the nation’s most storied institutions of higher learning, and I am even more deeply moved by what lies ahead,” Dr. Beilock said. “I am grateful to the board of trustees for their confidence and to all those who have welcomed me so warmly during the search process and shared their profound dedication to the institution. It is clear to me that Dartmouth’s tight-knit learning community, together with world-class research and scholarship, is an enormously powerful vehicle for the creation of outstanding ideas with real impact.”

Since July 2017, Dr. Beilock has been serving as the eighth president of Barnard College in New York City. Earlier, she had been serving as executive vice provost at the University of Chicago. She also was the Stella W. Rowley Professor in the department of psychology. Professor Beilock joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 2005. Earlier she taught at Miami University.

Professor Beilock is the author of Choke: What the Secrets of the Brain Reveal About Getting It Right When You Have To (Free Press, 2010) and How the Body Knows its Mind: The Surprising Power of the Physical Environment to Influence How You Think and Feel (Atria Books, 2015).

Dr. Beilock is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, where she majored in cognitive science. She holds a Ph.D. in kinesiology and psychology from Michigan State University.
