Three Women Named to Department Chairs

Karen L. Furie was appointed chair of the department of neurology at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. Her appointment is effective on August 6. She has been serving as associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and director of the stroke service at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Furie is a graduate of the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University and earned a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University.
Christy Johnson was appointed chair of the department of art at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. She has been serving as the associate dean of the School of Fine Arts at the University for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, England. Johnson is a native American but has taught in the United Kingdom since 1990.
Professor Johnson is a graduate of California State University Northridge. She holds a master’s degree and a master of fine arts degree from the University of New Mexico.
Laura E. Prestwood was named chair of the department of interior design and merchandising in the College of Fine Arts at Texas Christian University. She is the former director of the university’s women’s studies program. Dr. Prestwood will continue on as director of the university’s Center for Lighting Education.
Dr. Prestwood is a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She earned a master of fine arts degree in interior design at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in architecture from Texas A&M University in College Station.
