Five Women Who Have Been Appointed to Dean Positions

Michelle M. Camacho has been named as the next dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Utah, effective July 1. She is currently a professor in the department of sociology at the University of San Diego. Dr. Camacho is the co-author of The Borderlands of Education: Latinas in Engineering (Lexington Books, 2013).

Dr. Camacho is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in social science from the University of California, Irvine.

Melanie Bloom has been named interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. When she takes office on June 1, 2022, she will be the first woman to serve as dean. Dr. Bloom first joined the faculty at the university in 2005 as an assistant professor of Spanish. In 2020, Dr. Bloom was named the associate dean for humanities and undergraduate education in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Blooms holds a master’s degree in foreign language education and a Ph.D. in applied linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.

C. Debra M. Furr-Holden was named the next dean of the School of Global Public Health at New York University, effective July 1. An epidemiologist and public health professional with expertise in health disparities and health equity research, policy and practice, drug and alcohol dependence epidemiology, psychiatric epidemiology, and prevention science, Professor Furr-Holden comes to NYU from Michigan State University, where she is the C.S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health, associate dean for Public Health Integration, and the director of the NIH-funded Flint Center for Health Equity Solutions at MSU’s College of Human Medicine.

Dr. Furr-Holden is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University’s Krieger School of Arts & Sciences in Baltimore. She earned a Ph.D. from what is now the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins.

Kimberly R. Moffitt is the new dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Dr. Moffitt, a professor of language, literacy, and culture and affiliate professor of Africana studies, has served as interim dean since August 2020. Professor Moffet is co-editor of four books including Gladiators in Suits: Race, Gender, and the Politics of Representation in Scandal (Syracuse University Press, 2019).

Dr. Moffitt earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a master’s degree in communication from Boston University, and a doctorate in mass communication and media studies from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Stacey Harris was appointed dean of students at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, effective May 10. She has been serving as associate director of disability & access services at Boston University.

Harris holds a bachelor’s degree from Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. She earned a juris doctorate at the Suffolk University Law School in Boston.
