Two Women Appointed to Positions as Dean

Lucy Dalglish was appointed dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland in College Park. Her appointment is effective on August 1. For the past 12 years, she has been executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, an organization based in Arlington, Virginia, dedicated to protecting the First Amendment rights of members of the news media. She is a former partner of the Minneapolis law firm Dorsey & Whitney and was a reporter and editor for the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Dalglish is a graduate of the University of North Dakota. She holds a master’s degree from Yale Law School and a juris doctorate from the Vanderbilt University Law School.

Martha T. Roth, the Chauncey S. Boucher Distinguished Service Professor of Assriology at the University of Chicago, was appointed to a second five-year term as dean of the Humanities Division. Professor Roth joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1980. For the past 15 years, she has been editor-in-chief of the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary project.

Dr. Roth is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.
