The board of trustees of Framingham State University in Massachusetts has selected Nancy Niemi as the educational institution’s eighth president.
Framingham State University enrolls more than 3,500 undergraduate students and about 1,350 graduate students, according to the most recent data available from the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 58 percent of the undergraduate student body.
Dr. Niemi has been serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne. Earlier, she was professor and chair of the education department at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. She is the author of Degrees of Difference: Women, Men, and the Value of Higher Education (Routledge, 2017)
“I am so grateful to have this opportunity and am excited about getting to know all the wonderful people I met when I visited FSU in early December,” says Dr. Niemi. “The values at Framingham State align with my own: we share a commitment to public, fiercely student-centered education with a strong emphasis on liberal arts. There is so much at Framingham State that is already extraordinary and I look forward to working with the university to become an even greater version of itself.”
Dr. Niemi is a graduate of the University of Rochester in New York, where she majored in English literature. She holds a master’s degree in education from Elmira College in New York and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Rochester.
