Katrina Armstrong has been appointed chief executive officer of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. She will also hold the titles of executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences, and dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine. She will begin her new duties on March 1.
Dr. Armstrong has been serving as the Jackson Professor of Clinical Medicine at Harvard Medical School, professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and chair of the department of medicine and physician-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital. She joined the staff at Harvard in 2013.
Dr. Armstrong began her career as a resident in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital. She joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as a Physician Scientist Fellow in 1996 and became a member of the faculty two years later. Her work has focused on cancer risk and prevention in Black and Latinx patients, examined racial inequities in genetic testing and neonatal care, and analyzed the roles that segregation, discrimination, and distrust play in the health of marginalized populations.
Dr. Armstrong is a graduate of Yale University. She earned her medical degree at Johns Hopkins Univerity in Baltimore.
