Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in the United States

The United States Census Bureau recently has included questions on sexual orientation and gender identity in its Household Pulse Survey.

The most recent survey results found that 51.6 percent of adults in the United States were assigned female at birth. Some 50.5 percent of adults over the age of 18 now identify as female.

Of the 51.6 percent of adults who were assigned female at birth, 0.6 percent now identify themselves as transgender. Another 0.3 percent now identify as male and 1.7 percentage identify as neither male, female, or transgender.

For adults who were assigned male at birth, 0.6 percent now identify as transgender, 0.4 percent identify as female, and 1.7 percent identify as neither male, female, or transgender.

On the sexual orientation of the adult population, the survey found that 88.3 percent of American adults stated that they were straight. Some 3.3 percent said they were gay or lesbian and 4.4 percent were bisexual. Four percent of the respondents said their sexual orientation was something else or they were not sure of their sexual orientation.
