Summer Johnson McGee Appointed President of Salem Academy and College in North Carolina

The board of trustees of Salem Academy and College in Winton-Salem, North Carolina, has announced the appointment of Summer Johnson McGee as the twenty-second president of the institution. She will assume her new role starting July 1, 2021.

Founded in 1772, Salem Academy operates both a preparatory high school and a liberal arts degree-granting institution for women. The college enrolls just under 600 undergraduate students and about 100 graduate students, according to the latest available data from the U.S. Department of Education.

“I am deeply honored to be selected as the next leader of Salem Academy and College,” Dr. McGee said. “This is an incredibly exciting time for the institution to celebrate its history while at the same time imagining its future in bold new ways. Salem is uniquely positioned to develop the next generation of women leaders one woman at a time.”

Dr. McGee is the founding and current dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut. Before joining the University of New Haven, Dr. McGee served on the faculty of Loyola University Chicago, the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and Albany Medical College.

Dr. McGee is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, where she double majored in philosophy and bioethics. She holds a Ph.D. in bioethics and health policy from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore
