Affirmative Action for Women in Kenyan Higher Education

Public universities in Kenya admitted a total of 41,879 students this year, an increase of about 8,000 students from a year ago. Some 76,000 students applied for admission to these institutions.

In order to qualify for admission, students were required to score a minimum of 63 on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination. Women candidates only needed a minimum score of 61 on the entrance examination to qualify for admission to public universities. The two-point difference enabled an additional 2,608 women to gain admittance to public universities.
