Five Women Who Have Been Appointed to Positions as Dean

Shelley Simon was named dean of the College of Chiropractic at the University of Western States in Portland, Oregon. She is the former dean and interim president of the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine. In recent years, she has been operating a consulting service helping practitioners improve their chiropractic services.

Dr. Simon is a summa cum laude graduate of the College of Nursing of Downstate Medical Center in New York. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class in the doctoral program at Western States Chiropractic College. She also holds a master of public health degree and an educational doctorate from Portland State University.

Belinda C. Anderson was named dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Norfolk State University. Dr. Anderson is the former president of Virginia Union University in Richmond. Earlier, she had served as professor and dean of the School of General and Continuing Education at Norfolk State.

Dr. Anderson holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Radford University in Virginia and an educational doctorate from Virginia Tech.

Linda A. Hicke was chosen as the new dean of the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Her appointment is effective on July 15. Currently, she is associate vice president of research at Northwestern University.

Dr. Hicke is a summa cum laude graduate of Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

Maria Gallo was named dean of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii. She will begin her new assignment on July 16. Currently, she is professor and chair of the department of agronomy at the University of Florida. She is the immediate past president of the Crop Science Society of America.

Dr. Gallo is a graduate of Cornell University. She holds a master’s degree in crop science and a Ph.D. in genetics from North Carolina State University.

Madeline Scott was named interim dean of the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University. Her appointment is effective July 1. She has been serving as interim director of the School of Theater and has been a professor and director of the School of Dance for the past 15 years. She joined the faculty at the university in 1980.

Scott is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University and holds a master’s degree in dance performance from UCLA.
