Four Women Who Are Retiring From Their High-Level College and University Posts

Mariko Kaga, Class of 1952 Professor of Asian Languages at Carlton College in Northfield, Minnesota, has retired and been given emerita status. She joined the faculty at the college in 1986.

Professor Kaga earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Kobe Kaisei Women’s College in Kobe, Japan. She came to the United States in 1976. She earned a master’s degree in linguistics and a Ph.D. in second language acquisition and teacher’s education at the University of Illinois.

Karla Broadus, a senior lecturer and the director of the African American studies program at the University of Texas at San Antonio, is retiring after 24 years of serving as a faculty member at the university. She joined the faculty in 1996 and has led the Black studies program since 2016.

Broadus earned a bachelor’s degree in social welfare from Southern Illinois University before attending Pepperdine University for her first master’s degree in education. Broadus later earned her second master’s degree in literacy education and educational leadership and administration at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Lisa Spargo, special projects coordinator for the Office of the Chancellor at the University of Mississippi, is retiring after 25 years on the staff of the educational institution. She began her tenure at the university as a speechwriter for the chancellor of the university. Besides her role in the chancellor’s office. Dr. Spargo has taught one section of business communications each semester for 20 years.

Dr. Spargo is a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. She earned a Ph.D. in English at the University of Mississippi.

Trudy Hanson, professor and head of the department of communication at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, is retiring on January 15,  after 31 years of service to the university. She joined the faculty in 1989.

D. Hanson holds a bachelor’s degree in speech/English education and a master’s degree in speech communication from Louisiana State University. She completed a doctorate in higher education at Texas Tech University.
