Three Women Leaders of Colleges and Universities Announce They Are Stepping Down

Donna Carroll, president of Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, is retiring after 27 tears as leader of the educational institution. Before coming to Dominican University, Dr. Carroll served as secretary of the university at Fordham University in New York and as vice president and dean of the college and dean of students at Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Carroll received her bachelor’s degree in English from Wellesley College in Massachusetts. She earned master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education administration and counseling from the University of Cincinnati.

Shirley A. Reed, the founding president of South Texas College in McAllen, will retire in January. During her tenure, the college has grown from serving about 1,000 students to 34,000 students on five campuses.

Dr. Reed earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida and a master of library science degree from the University of Hawaii. She holds a doctorate in higher education administration from Illinois State University.

Lara Tiedens, president of Scripps College in Claremont, California, announced that she is stepping down on April 15. She will become the executive director of Schwarzman Scholars, an international graduate fellowship program in New York designed to prepare future global leaders to meet the geopolitical challenges of the 21st century. Dr. Tiedens became the ninth president of Scripps College in 2016. Earlier, she was senior associate dean of academic affairs in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

Dr. Tiedens is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Michigan.
