Four Women Earn Promotions at Highly Rated Bates College in Lewiston, Maine

Highly rated Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, has announced the promotion of five faculty members. Four of these promotions went to women.

GenevieÌ€ve Robert was promoted to associate professor in the department of earth and climate sciences. She was also granted tenure. Her research concentrates on the physical and chemical properties of magma and how they influence magmatic processes and the eruptive behavior of volcanoes. Dr. Robert is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal. She holds a master’s degree in geological sciences from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in geology from the Univerity of Missouri.

Meredith Greer was promoted to full professor of mathematics. She joined the faculty in 2002 and was promoted to associate professor in 2008. She chairs the Digital and Computational Studies program at the college. Dr. Greer is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where she majored in mathematics. she holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Sonja Pieck was named a full professor of environmental science. She is interested in international and transnational environmental politics. She has conducted research in Latin America exploring environmental activism, especially in Peru and Ecuador. Dr. Piek joined the faculty at Bates College in 2007. She holds a Ph.D. from Clark College in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Therí Pickens was promoted to full professor of English. She is the author of Black Madness :: Mad Blackness (Duke University Press, 2019) Dr. Pickens is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey where she majored in comparative literature. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of California, Los Angeles
