In Memoriam: Ann Metcalf, 1940-2020

Ann Metcalf, a longtime faculty member at Mills College in Oakland, California, died last month at the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland. She was 80 years old.

Dr. Metalf was raised in Muscatine, Iowa, and graduated as class valedictorian from Muscatine High School in 1958. She earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology at the University of Chicago. She later received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Stanford University.

Dr. Metcalf taught and conducted research at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Washington, and the Institute for Scientific Analysis in California, before joining the teaching faculty at Mills College in 1984. Her research was focused on women’s studies, Native American studies, child development, and social inequality.

Professor Metcalf taught at Mills College until her retirement in 2016, when she was named professor emerita of anthropology.
