University of Pittsburgh’s Sharon Alvarez to Lead the Academy of Management

Sharon Alvarez, who holds the Thomas W. Olofson Chair in Entrepreneurship and is a professor of business administration at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh, has been elected to lead the Academy of Management Board of Governors. Her five-year term begins as vice president-elect and program chair-elect, culminating as president of the Academy of Management, and a final year as past president.

The Academy of Management is a professional association for management and organization scholars. Its worldwide members consist of business professors and doctoral students, academics in related social sciences and other fields, and practitioners who value knowledge creation and application. Founded in 1936, it has nearly 20,000 members from more than 120 countries.

“In many ways, I have been building toward this position my entire career,” said Professor Alvarez. “I have been the chair of the research committee and chair of the entrepreneurship division of Academy of Management, which was also a five- year commitment.” Also, Dr. Alvarez recently finished a three-year term as an editor of the Academy of Management Review, the flagship journal of the Academy of Management.

Professor Alvarez holds bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in business administration from the University of Colorado. She also earned a master’s degree in international management from the University of Denver.
