The New President of Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, California

Tammeil Gilkerson is the president of Evergreen Valley College in San Jose, California. The college has announced that all classes will be held online for the fall 2020 semester due to the COIVD-19 pandemic.

Evergreen Valley College enrolls nearly 9,600 students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 55 percent of the student body.

“I am exceptionally proud to be named the president of one of the premier community colleges in the state,” Dr. Gilkerson said. “I look forward to returning to the Evergreen Valley College community that has already taught me so much. I am excited to listen, learn, and grow together.”

Since 2017, she has been president of Laney College in Oakland. Prior to her role at Laney College, Dr. Gilkerson served as vice president of academic and student affairs at Contra Costa College and as the first diversity, inclusion, and innovation officer for the Contra Costa Community College District.

The first in her family to graduate from college, Dr. Gilkerson holds a bachelor’s degree in history, a master’s degree in counseling with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy and pupil personnel services, and a doctorate in organizational leadership with an emphasis in higher education.
