A Quartet of Women Academics Who Have Announced Their Retirements

Karen Uehling, a professor of English, has retired from Boise State University after 38 years of service. Professor Uehling first began teaching at the university in 1981 and specialized in basic writing and creative nonfiction courses.

Professor Uehling is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine, where she majored in English language and literatures. She holds a master’s degree in English language and literatures from the University of California, Davis.

Alfreda Brown, vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion at Kent State University in Ohio has retired. She had served in this role for more than a decade. Brown came to Kent State University in 2009 after working for 21 years at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Dr. Brown holds a bachelor’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan College, a master’s degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern University.

Jeanine Basinger, special advisor to the president at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, has retired. She is the former the Corwin-Fuller Professor of Film Studies at the university. Dr. Basinger first joined the faculty at the university in 1980.

Professor Basinger holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree both from South Dakota State University.

Deb Bergstrand, a professor of mathematics and statistics at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, has retired. A scholar of graph theory, she joined the faculty at Swarthmore in 1999 after 14 years at Williams College.

Professor Bergstrand received her bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania. She earned and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1980.
